Increased Olive Fly Population, Tim Harvesting Recommended for Olive Growers

An inspection of traps for monitoring the olive fly population in the areas of Bar and Ulcinj (the large olive grove area – Valdanos) was conducted on October 5, 2026. The fly population in McPhail traps has increased compared to the previous inspection on September 25. Flies were not caught on yellow plates only at sites Bar 2 and Valdanos 4. Fruit examination in the laboratory showed that active infestation was not recorded only at Valdanos 3, while at other sites it ranged from 3.3% (Bar 1, Valdanos 1, and Valdanos 4) to 16.7% at Bar 3. Olive growers are advised to plan their harvest based on the condition of their orchards, as larvae will now develop rapidly. They must avoid leaving olive fruits on the branches for too long, as this will directly increase the fly population and its potential for the next growing season.
