Parliament adopts second reading of the draft law on the protection of personal data processed for the purpose of preventing and combating crimes

The adoption of this draft represents an important step in the process of harmonizing the legislation of the Republic of Moldova with the European Union standards in the field of personal data protection and complements the normative framework established by Law No. 195/2024 on the protection of personal data, which is set to enter into force on August 23, 2026. The new normative act sets out special rules regarding how competent authorities—criminal investigation bodies, prosecutors, courts, and other authorized institutions—process personal data for the purpose of preventing or combating crimes, investigating criminal acts, conducting criminal proceedings, or executing penalties and security measures. In this regard, the law establishes clear obligations for competent authorities regarding the legality of processing, limiting data use to the purposes provided by law, respecting the principle of data minimization, and implementing necessary technical and organizational measures to ensure security and confidentiality. Law No. 195/2024 on the protection of personal data contributes to strengthening a modern normative framework aligned with EU standards. The adoption of this law reaffirms the Republic of Moldova's commitment to building an effective personal data protection system in the field of law enforcement, in accordance with European standards and the objectives of the European Union integration process.
