Sovereign Tech Fellowship: Applications are open!
Our pilot for the Sovereign Tech Fellowship program in 2025 was a great success: six maintainers spent a year working on the maintenance of 18 critical foundational technologies, benefiting from increased focus, better working conditions, and financial support. The Sovereign Tech Fellowship invests directly in the people behind the code, supporting maintainers, community managers, and technical writers whose work underpins the health and stability of critical components in the open source ecosystem. This includes reviewing changes, triaging security issues, coordinating communities, and documenting processes. By providing flexible, targeted support, the fellowship enables these experts to focus on impactful work, strengthens the ecosystem for everyone, and builds the foundations that allow the next generation of contributors and maintainers to engage, learn, and thrive. We are expanding the fellowship program beyond FOSS maintainers to also include community managers and technical writers, and we will contract up to 12 Sovereign Tech Fellows. We understand that in open source development, roles within projects are not always clearly defined and can overlap: maintainers often take on community management tasks, and community managers frequently contribute to documentation.
