A Short Guide to Basic Care for Low Birth Weight Babies
The Ministry of Health of Montenegro, in cooperation with UNICEF and international experts, conducted an assessment of the quality of care for mothers and newborns in eight maternity hospitals in Montenegro, four emergency obstetric care units, and the Neonatology Center in Podgorica from April to May 2023. One of the key recommendations was to improve the quality of healthcare services for newborns by enhancing healthcare workers' knowledge and skills in neonatal resuscitation and basic care for healthy babies and low birth weight infants. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with UNICEF and LDS Charities (an American organization that conducts training worldwide based on evidence-based protocols of the American Academy of Pediatrics), organized training on neonatal resuscitation, basic newborn care, and care for low birth weight babies for healthcare workers working with newborns (gynecologists, midwives, pediatric nurses, pediatricians, neonatologists, anesthesiologists). With the support of UNICEF Montenegro and in cooperation with the Clinical Center of Montenegro and the Ministry of Health, a project to improve the quality of hospital care for mothers and newborns in Montenegro was implemented. Part of the project involved creating a Short Guide to Basic Care for Low Birth Weight Babies, aligned with evidence-based medicine and international guidelines.
