Montenegro has secured 'A' status for the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro

The Parliament of Montenegro adopted a new Law on the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, marking an important step in further improving the human rights protection system in Montenegro. The new legal framework simultaneously creates conditions for further enhancing the international standing of the Protector institution and obtaining an 'A' status as a national human rights institution, which is an important standard of institutional independence and quality of human rights and freedoms protection. The law introduces a more transparent and participatory process for selecting the Protector, clearer criteria for selection, and stronger guarantees of institutional, administrative, and financial independence of the institution. At the same time, mechanisms for human rights protection are improved, especially concerning children and other vulnerable groups, as well as monitoring the actions of state authorities in accordance with the Protector's recommendations. For the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights, the adoption of this law represents an important part of ongoing efforts to build a stronger and more effective human rights protection system and align it with European and international standards.
