Information on the Severe Appearance of Fig Rust Mite
Regular field inspections and reports from producers have recently observed a strong occurrence of fig rust mite in several locations around Podgorica. The presence of mites appears as hard waxy shields on leaves, branches, and fruits of the fig tree. The female lays a large number of eggs (1000-2000) during May. The name "medič" comes from the abundant honeydew it secretes, which attracts sooty fungi, causing affected plant parts to become sticky and blackened. If not controlled, the mite can weaken affected trees, leading to their drying and decline within 2-3 years. Chemical treatment involves applying mineral oils with insecticides after winter pruning and during larval emergence when the wax coating is absent.
