Coordination Committee for Supervision extends scope to include Eurodac
Brussels, 12 June – From today, the coordinated supervision of the European Union’s asylum and migration database (Eurodac) will be conducted by the Coordination Committee for Supervision (CSC). Eurodac is an information system originally created to compare fingerprints of asylum seekers and irregular migrants, which has developed into a comprehensive asylum and migration management system. It is crucial for implementing the Dublin III Regulation, which determines the Member State responsible for processing an asylum application. Operational since 15 January 2003, the system is used by all EU Member States, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. National Data Protection Authorities oversee the processing of personal data by national authorities and its transmission to Eurodac, while the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) oversees the processing at the central level and its transmission to Member States. The CSC is a group of Data Protection Authorities that collectively ensure coordinated oversight of large-scale IT systems and EU institutions, offices, and agencies under its jurisdiction.
