Science and international cooperation strengthen the fight against Xylella fastidiosa bacteria
The conference was organized by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Horizon Europe BeXyl project, the EUPHRESCO III research network, the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute in Bari (CIHEAM Bari), the Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR IPSP), and the Regional Plant Health Service of the Puglia region. Special attention was given to the resistance of olive varieties, biological and integrated control methods, vector biology and management, epidemiological modeling, monitoring systems, as well as the economic and social impacts caused by this bacteria in affected areas. Results from long-term field research, genomic and molecular analyses, and innovative approaches including microbiome analysis and modern biotechnological methods were presented, opening new possibilities for the revival of olive growing in affected regions. During the conference, a meeting of plant health service representatives from Italy, Spain, France, and Portugal was held to discuss experiences in implementing EU legislation regulating measures to prevent the spread of this bacteria. For Montenegro, which continuously aligns its plant health system with EU legislation, such events contribute to strengthening expertise, improving monitoring systems, and timely preparation for the application of the latest prevention and control measures. Collaboration with EFSA and European partners is crucial for preserving plant production and protecting agriculture from the risks posed by Xylella fastidiosa,” said Dr. Tamara Popović, head of the Plant Health Department in the Food Safety, Veterinary, and Phytosanitary Affairs Directorate.
