NGI Zero awarded two EC research and innovation actions

€11.2 million in funding will support R&D on privacy, search, and discovery. NLnet Foundation has been chosen to lead a coalition of thirteen partners to coordinate two of the first four Research & Innovation Actions within the Next Generation Internet initiative. The internet's growth has significantly impacted society, but there is much room for improvement in technology and its effects on people. Michiel Leenaars, director of strategy at NLnet Foundation and project lead of NGI Zero, emphasizes the consortium's goal to support efforts to make the internet more inclusive and beneficial for all. This funding marks the beginning of a new European Commission initiative aimed at reimagining and re-engineering the internet to be more inclusive, diverse, and secure. NGI Zero is composed of leading non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting researchers and developers in areas such as security, code quality, accessibility, localization, packaging, reproducible builds, documentation, responsible disclosure, diversity, and community building.
