Bečić: Strong alliances are crucial for our security

I am pleased that after today's joint attendance at a large international military exercise on Durmitor, we have the privilege of hosting you at the ceremony, which I discussed with General Dun back in the middle of last year at the Pentagon, on the occasion of a significant anniversary of our mutual relations. Montenegro's relations with the United States are based on mutual respect, trust, and a strong commitment to freedom and democratic values. Bečić emphasized that we live in a world that is more complex, unpredictable, and security-challenging than two decades ago, highlighting that no country can respond to all challenges alone. "Therefore, strong alliances, reliable partnerships, and readiness for coordinated action are key to our security," Bečić stated. Speaking about the importance of partnership for Montenegro, Bečić noted that it has played a special role in developing defense capabilities and preparing for NATO membership, but its value far exceeds military cooperation. "It has contributed to strengthening our institutions and developing human capacities. That is precisely what makes this partnership so valuable," he said. Regarding Montenegro's accession to NATO in 2017, he said, "From supporting Montenegro on its path to NATO membership, we have moved to joint work as allies, with an even greater focus on interoperability, readiness, capacity development, and our contribution to collective defense." The Chief of General Staff also highlighted, "I am extremely proud of how this partnership has developed over the past 20 years – from our first exchanges to lasting friendships, professional training, and operational capabilities that we have built and developed together today," said Major General Dajan Dun, Commander of the National Guard of Maine.
