Montenegro expects to become an EU member in 2028: Bulgaria is among its key supporters

Ivanović emphasizes that more than 75% of Montenegro’s citizens support EU membership and that there is broad political and social consensus on the country’s European path. He particularly highlights Bulgaria, describing it as a friendly and allied country that has strongly supported EU enlargement and Montenegro’s accession negotiations from the outset. According to him, Montenegro is counting on Bulgaria’s support not only within EU institutions but also in discussions with representatives of other countries. Ivanović recalls that the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries was confirmed at the 2003 Thessaloniki Summit. He believes that Montenegro’s successful accession, and potentially that of other countries in the region, would strengthen the EU, enhance its security, and make it a more credible and attractive political community. The wars of recent years, including Russia’s war against Ukraine, affect the entire European continent as well as countries seeking to join the EU. Ivanović concludes that accelerating enlargement would reaffirm the European Union’s credibility, strengthen its geopolitical importance and security, and demonstrate that EU membership remains an attractive goal.
