Joint Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro and the United Nations System in Montenegro on the Occasion of United Nations Day 2026
The adoption of the Charter of the United Nations eighty-one years ago laid the foundations for a shared vision of a world in which peace, human rights and cooperation among nations would guide our common future. Conflicts, the climate crisis, growing inequalities and rapid technological development, together with disregard for international law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law, are testing the international community’s ability to respond collectively to challenges and preserve a rules-based international order. Global challenges require global solutions, and the United Nations remains a key forum for dialogue, cooperation and joint action. This year, Montenegro marked 20 years of membership in the United Nations. Over the past two decades, it has strengthened its voice on the international stage and contributed to efforts to advance peace, human rights and sustainable development. As Montenegro progresses towards European Union membership and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, it is important that our cooperation continues to bring about concrete changes in people’s lives. We want more effective institutions, better and equal opportunities for children and young people, stronger and more equal girls and women, a more resilient society and a healthier environment. United Nations Day is also an opportunity to reaffirm Montenegro’s commitment to international cooperation, building a more peaceful, just and sustainable world, and defending effective multilateralism with the United Nations at its centre.
